Dolphins defeated by record play in T20 encounter

2014-09-30 00:00

ROBIN Uthappa and Manish Pandey struck a record partnership to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders to a 36-run victory over the Dolphins in their Champions League Twenty20 Group A match yesterday.

Uthappa and Pandey put on a record CLT20 third-wicket stand of 153 off 91 balls as Kolkata posted a formidable 187-2 after the Indian Premier League team had won the toss and elected to bat.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine nabbed 3-33 as the Dolphins stumbled to 151-8 with 18-year-old Andile Phehlukwayo top-scoring with 37.

Opening batsman Uthappa, who was circumspect at the start of his knock, ended on 85 not out off 55 balls with 13 fours while Pandey was unbeaten on 76 off 47 deliveries with five fours and five sixes. The duo turned around a poor start for their team after they had slipped to 34-2 after five overs with Gautam Gambhir (12) and Jacques Kallis (6) both being dismissed cheaply.

They took the attack to the South African team with Uthappa bringing up his half-century off 35 balls and Pandey racing to his 50 off 39 deliveries.

Seamer Robbie Frylinck was the best of the Dolphins’ attack as he ended with 1-29 off his four overs.

The Dolphins’ reply never got off the ground as they struggled to 57-4 despite a 47-run third-wicket stand between Vaughn van Jaarsveld (19) and Morné van Wyk (34).

Khaya Zondo (32) and Phehlukwayo added some respectability with a 63-run fifth-wicket stand off 5.4 overs.

The left-handed Phehlukwayo looked a good prospect as he struck six fours and a six during his entertaining 18 balls innings before being bowled by Narine.

Narine accounted for Robbie Frylinck (11) and Zondo with consecutive deliveries, both men caught at deep midwicket by Piyush Chawla as the Dolphins’ innings faded.

The win was Kolkata’s 13th T20 victory in a row, a record for an Indian team and they play Hobart in the semi-finals after ending the league phase of the competition top of Group A while the Dolphins bow out after losing all four of the matches.
