Dolphins’ frustrations pile up

2012-12-22 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN — Johan van der Wath hit 154 for the Chevrolet Knights against the Sunfoil Dolphins on day two of their Sunfoil Series clash at Chevrolet Park yesterday to help dig the hosts out of a hole, while the Dolphins were left frustrated as the Knights ended the day on 465 for nine, with a lead of 244.

Wickets continued to tumble in the morning session in Bloemfontein as the Knights scrapped their way to 182 for six at lunch thanks to some gutsy efforts from Dean Elgar, Werner Coetsee and a fine century from Van der Wath.

Resuming the day on 54 for two, Rudi Second became the first to fall on the second day, caught by Khaya Zondo off Kyle Abbott for 25.

The slump continued as Ryan Bailey departed soon after for four, Abbott again doing the damage.

Elgar stood firm for a while, notching up 43 off 68 before he departed off the bowling of Calvin Savage after edging through to the keeper.

Obus Pienaar added 20 before he fell to Craig Alexander and the Knights looked in trouble at 108 for six. A valiant effort between Coetsee and Van der Wath then started and the partnership stood firm until tea.

The two resumed after the break and it wasn’t until a last-grasp move from Dolphins skipper Daryn Smit that the partnership was broken.

Smit swapped the gloves for the ball and dismissed Coetsee for 69 to bring an end to a crafty partnership.

Van Der Wath continued his resilience and shepherded the tail as he made his way to 154 before he was stumped by Morne van Wyk as Smit picked up his second wicket.

To add to the Dolphins’ frustration, Malusi Siboto and Shadley van Schalkwyk combined for an unbeaten 71-run stand for the ninth wicket.
