Dolphins’ improving form on test this weekend

2012-03-02 00:00

THE Dolphins, bolstered by the signing of West Indies quick Fidel Edwards, will put their ever-improving form in the MiWay T20 challenge to the test at the weekend with two games, against the Warriors and Highveld Lions.

The men from KwaZulu-Natal play the Warriors tonight at Kingsmead in Durban and the Lions on Sunday at the same venue and have a wonderful opportunity to entrench themselves in a play-off position.

The Dolphins begin the weekend in fourth place on the log standings, six points off the table-topping Knights, who have played two more games than the Dolphins.

However, the Warriors will be no pushovers, having been bolstered by the return of batsman Colin Ingram and seamer Rusty Theron from international duty with the Proteas, while the Lions start the weekend one place above the Dolphins on the log.

Dolphins coach Lance Klusener said he was not paying special attention to the current log standings, although his team have won three out for four matches.

"To be honest I don't know where we are on the table," said Klusener.

"We are just going to play game by game and at the end we will tally it up and if we are in the play-offs then so be it. It's been a good effort so far, they have all been last-ball victories and if there hadn't been application and a little bit of dedication [from the players] then we could easily have lost four from four," he added.

One area of concern for Klusener has been the relative failure of the Dolphins' top order to put together good starts for the team, with most of the runs coming from the middle-order.

The Dolphins, in their four matches, have made starts of 42/3, 30/2, 51/4 and 56/4, but Klusener said it was only a matter of time before a top order that included the big-hitting Loots Bosman and Cameron Delport hit their straps.

"It [a good start] is coming. We've got some serious strikers up front and even though the starts haven't been great they have been at a good pace, which allows the guys coming in to take a bit of time and still achieve a good score.

"Even though we haven't had a 70 without loss start, someone is going to collect out there. Someone is going to run into Bosman and Delport for half-an-hour," he said.
