Dolphins meet Inland in PMB today

2009-09-15 00:00

THE KZN Dolphins are in the city today, playing a 45-over warm-up match against KZN Inland on Goldstones at Maritzburg College.

The Dolphins are still nursing a few injuries, with Yusuf Abdullah and explosive former Eagles opener Loots Bosman still on the sidelines.

With their domestic campaign less than three weeks away, Imraan Khan’s men will be looking for a useful workout after last week’s warm-up against the Suncoast Academy was rained off.

The Dolphins have named several youngsters in today’s squad, with National Academy trio David Miller, Keshav Maharaj and Khaya Zondo all getting a chance to stake a claim ahead of the SuperSport Series opener against the Titans on October 1.

Daryn Smit and HD Ackerman are still wrapping up their county seasons, as is returning coach Graham Ford.

Doug Watson’s Inland outfit, meanwhile, is also eyeing the start of next month, as they will resume their interests in the SAA three-day Challenge with back-to-back home fixtures against Western Province and KZN Coastals.

National hockey player and top-order batsman Tim Drummond will captain the home side.

There is also a place for the experienced Dipak Anand, who has made the move from the coast to boost Inland’s resources.

Both sides are missing several players, particularly in the bowling departments.

Inland are without Varsity speedster Ollie Humphries, while all-rounder Morne van Vuuren has only just arrived back from his English season.

For the Dolphins, Abdullah’s and Quinton Friend’s absences leave Johann Louw to lead the attack, though he will receive handy support from the evergreen Jon Kent.

The all-rounder has been handed a benefit season, and there are several events planned to celebrate his sterling services to the Dolphins, including the match at the Maritzburg Oval in January.

Born into a generation littered with world-class all-rounders, Kent has still churned out a successful career at Kingsmead and has also earned international caps for Scotland and the Proteas.

Today’s match starts at 9.30 am.

Dolphins: Imraan Khan (c), Ahmed Amla, Cameron Delport, Pierre de Bruyn, Geoff Abbott, Jon Kent, Khaya Zondo, David Miller, Mthoko Shezi, Keshav Maharaj, Bradley Barnes, Johann Louw.

Inland: S Mazibuko, Mario Olivier, Tim Drummond (c), Glen Addicott, Doug Watson, Kyle Nipper, Dipak Anand, Lyndon Brown, Mbasa Gqadushe, Navar Harridave, Richard Hlela.
