Dolphins plunder 400 runs on day one

2010-09-14 00:00

THE Dolphins weathered the early movement before cashing in on their good start to plunder 400 runs on day one of the four-day friendly against the Cape Cobras at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

The Cobras won the toss and put the Dolphins in — a decision the home side might well have taken themselves given the notorious early-morning assistance the seamers enjoy in the KZN capital.

Dolphin openers Imraan Khan and Loots Bosman negotiated some testing bowling from the Cobras’ front men, but once the initial liveliness had abated they were richly rewarded.

Bosman smashed a six next to one of the floodlight pylons and would have hit another into the Dusi had he middled a wide-ish delivery from Johann Louw. Instead the ball flew high to Cobras captain Andrew Puttick in the slips.

This was the first of four big partnerships as the Dolphins top order got in some invaluable batting practice on a sweltering day that was not kind to bowlers.

Hashim Amla unveiled his trademark off-drives until he clipped Justin Ontong to leg for Stiaan van Zyl to take a catch diving forward, and brother Ahmed looked equally at home before falling to another soft dismissal.

Enter David Miller, and batting was made to look even easier than before as he profited handsomely from the terrific platform laid by his predecessors.

All the while, Dolphins captain Imraan Khan worked the ball around in between unleashing a series of cracking pulls and drives primarily off the back foot, including a sumptuous square-cut six that rattled into the railing in front of the pavilion. In all, Khan hit 24 fours and one six.

With Khan just 10 short of a double ton and Miller in full flight, not to mention Bradley Moses in next, the morning session at least could be worth an urgent appointment away from the office.
