Dolphins rained out of One-day Cup

2011-11-28 00:00

RAIN has once again interrupted a One-day Cup match featuring the Dolphins. But it came too late to save them against the Knights at the Pietermaritzburg Oval yesterday, where the home side lost by 102 runs on Duckworth Lewis and saw their hopes of advancing to the play-offs go up in smoke.

Chasing 303 to win the match, the Dolphins batted poorly, losing wickets at regular intervals.

After winning the toss the Knights chose to bat on a flat wicket with a quick outfield.

Without Friedel de Wet, their regular pace bowler, Kyle Abbott and Dane Patterson opened the bowling and were hoping for early wickets.

But, the pair bowled poorly with Morne van Wyk (14) taking advantage of loose deliveries. However, Abbott set him up well to have him caught in the covers. Patterson tried to keep the pressure up at the other end, but made scoring easy for the batsmen.

Just as Rilee Rossouw looked like he was settling in for a big innings, Abbott had him caught behind for eight.

Robbie Frylinck got the wicket of Michael Erlank (30), and from there Dean Elgar and Obus Pienaar dominated the game.

The bowlers tempted Elgar with the occasional wide delivery and he played them well to all parts of the ground, scoring boundaries with ease.

He was caught for 117 off the bolwing of Patterson.

Abbott 4/41 and Frylinck 2/50 were the Dolphins’ best bowlers.

The Dolphins needed a good performance from their opening batsmen, and it looked as if Imraan Khan and Loots Bosman were going to build a significant opening partnership, but Johan van der Wath bowled an excellent ball to take the wicket of Khan (11).

Divan van Wyk played well for his 32 before he played a poor shot off the bowling of Werner Coetzee.

David Miller and Daryn Smit played smartly, and with the sky darkening, they looked to push the Dolphins score to the Duckworth Lewis required total.

But Miller played a poor shot down the throat of square leg off the bowling of Dillon du Preez.
