Don’t blame a claim — Land Affairs

2007-12-22 00:00

Mayu Siduduzile Sosibo of the regional Land Claims Commission said it was with great regret that they learned of Greene’s murder.

“The department of Land Affairs/Claims Commission condemn any act of crime and violence against all citizens of our country.

“Hence, we promptly act on any allegations of victimisation that are reported to us.

“It is important for all affected parties when reacting to such unfortunate incidents to exercise caution and be careful with our utterances.

“I am worried about suggestions that the untimely murder of Dave is linked to the land claims, without any evidence.

“It is such utterances that propel disunity within the farming community and claimants.”

She said the commission has not received any reports of threats to the lives of landowners in the Gongolo area, nor heard of any police reports to such incidents.

“It is difficult at this stage to link this incident to the claimant community since the claimants are well aware that the claimed properties are being expropriated by the government.

“The decision to expropriate is a result of protracted negotiations that took more than five years.”
