Dorning murder suspects appear in Howick Magistrate’s Court

2009-12-01 00:00

THREE men appeared briefly in the Howick Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with charges of housebreaking and the murder of a former provincial government spokesman, Dr Warwick Dorning (55).

Dorning was shot dead by intruders in his farmhouse on the farm Adamshurst near Howick on November 7. His wife, Dawn, who was at home at the time, was not injured.

Welcome Madlala (34), Mlungisi Hadebe (21) and Howick police inspector Michael Sokhela (40) were remanded in custody for seven days, pending further investigations into the case by members of the Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit.

According to a statement issued by provincial SAPS spokesperson, Director Phindile Radebe at the weekend, the policeman was found in possession of items stolen during the attack on the Dorning household.

Police are investigating the possibility that the suspects are linked to other attacks and robberies on farms in the KZN Midlands area.

The three accused were arrested at the weekend, while a fourth suspect was shot and killed after opening fire on police who had traced him to the Cramond area on Saturday morning.
