Double trouble of the laughing kind

2012-01-26 00:00

TWO of KwaZulu-Natal’s best comic creations, Beauty Ramapelepele and Karou Charou, are joining forces in the show, Beauty and Da Charou, which promises audiences double trouble of the laughing kind.

Beauty Ramapelepele (aka Durban actor Ben Voss) is a 50-year-old nouveau-riche Houghton mother of two and the perfect South African weapon. A black, bright, beautiful, bitchy woman, she has a nose for gossip and the inside line on everything from BEE to the presidential race. Her’s is a rags-to-riches story of our relatively tender democracy built on her simple and effective business philosophy: invest in Africa … buy a politician!

The enigmatic and charismatic Karou Charou shot to fame with his groundbreaking one-man show, Kama Sutra, which has enjoyed sold-out success in KwaZulu-Natal and most recently in Johannesburg at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City.

With his brash, unapologetic style, laced with expletives, and trademark forays into the audience, Charou has single handedly turned the Indian comedy circuit on its head.

Sagren Moodley, director of promoter, Box-Office Promotions, said that at the Durbz Comedy Jam in the Durban City Hall last year, of the eight comedians who performed, Beauty and Karou Charou raised the most laughs and seemed to gel on stage. “That was when the idea for Beauty and Da Charou was first conceptualised,” says Moodley.

The show format will see both comedians performing their own routines, before joining forces on stage in a set which will involve much audience interaction.

Maritzburgers will be able to watch the show on February  3 at the Aryan Hall in Khan Road, Raisethorpe. Doors open at 6.30 pm, and the show starts at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are R100 (R80 for the early bird special) if bought at Northway Pharmacy (Northway Mall), Medikist Pharmacy or Just Undies (Liberty Midlands Mall ) or R120 at Computicket and at the door.

The Beauty and Da Charou tour launches at the Izulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World at 8 pm tomorrow and Saturday night. The two comedians will also perform at The Odeon in Chatsworth at 6.30 pm on Sunday, at the Umfolozi Casino in Richards Bay at 7.30 pm on February 4, at the Black Rock Casino in Newcastle at 7.30 pm on February 10 and February 11 and at the civic hall in Ladysmith at 7.30 pm on February 17.

Tickets can be bought at Computicket. Please note: no under 13s allowed.
