Downed tools: A dark Easter for some consumers

2012-04-06 00:00

CONSUMERS without electricity are likely to spend the Easter holidays in the dark as workers contracted to the Msunduzi Municipality to perform electricity connections and disconnections have this week downed tools to protest late payments.

The contractors claim they are yet to be paid this month.

The frustrated workers told The Witness this week they will again not be doing any work until they have received their payment.

The contractors claim they have to down tools on the first week of almost every month to force the municipality to pay them.

Last month they also threatened to strike after their payment was delayed, they said, by two months.

The contractors said according to the agreements they have with the municipality, they are supposed to submit their invoices on the third day of each month and the municipality pays them on the last day of each month. Their payments are contractually delayed by a month.

“They always insist that we should have our invoices in by the third of each month, if we are late there is trouble and we must not complain when we get paid late.”
