Dragons slay Inland bowlers in Potch

2009-10-30 00:00

AFTER stand-in captain Morne van Vuuren won the toss, he chose to field and North West made the KZN Inland team pay on day one of the three-day Provincial Challenge match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom yesterday.

NW Dragons piled on a massive 375 for six in their allotted 85 first innings overs, to which Inland replied with 105 for one after 29 overs at the close.

It is a commendable fightback by Inland but with a deficit of 270 — and 56 overs still to bat — it appears unlikely that at a required run rate of five to the over they will get anywhere near establishing a first innings lead.

Barring a calamity, NW have effectively batted the visitors out of the game.

But aside from the majority of Inland’s bowlers who were belted around the park, the most disappointed man in the squad must have been Chad Barron. He was left out of the starting XI after player/coach Doug Watson had said Wednesday that one of the four white top-order batsmen — Barron, Mario Olivier, the fit-gain Glenn Addicott or Watson himself — would be dropped because of the maximum six white players allowed in the team, and the fact that three bowlers could not be replaced.

On debut last weekend Barron hit 109 and 40. Olivier, Addicott and Watson have also scored hundreds in the three matches so far, which highlights the inadequacies of the current quota system still being enforced at this level.
