Dressage entry record

DURBAN Shongweni Club shone in all its glory at the SA Dressage Championships last weekend.

A record number of entries came from around the country, with some horses travelling two days to reach the venue. There was an international flavour with judges Peter Engle from Germany and Nicholas Verwer from Holland.

Both were unanimous in giving the event their approval and praising the facilities at the club. They said the facilities were comparable to anywhere in Europe.

As for the quality of the horses, they were impressed by both the imported, and locally bred steeds.

Over five days, the programme ran from 7.30 am to 5.10 pm daily, with three arenas used. Prize giving was enjoyed at the main clubhouse in a relaxed atmosphere after the tough competition in the arenas.

Friday saw the championship classes for all grades being judged, followed by the highly anticipated SA individual champs, with five judges on duty.

A large crowd gathered to watch Chere Burger, Andrea Harrison, Candice Hobday and Adrian van Wyk compete for the title, every horse and rider giving a masterclass of horsemanship.

Once the judges had tallied the scores, Burger came out tops, ahead of Harrison, Hobday and Van Wyk.

Burger was also chosen to represent South Africa at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, in September. Here she will ride a Friesian horse she keeps in Europe, the first time such a horse competes at the games.

All in all, this was a championship to remember. Organiser Bev Pendock thanked the sponsors, saying the bar had been raised to ensure a better event in April next year.
