A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD driver’s heart stopped beating, but paramedics resuscitated him, after he lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into a tree on Birmingham Road, Panorama Gardens, early on Saturday evening.

Paramedics found the car partly wrapped around the tree.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the man was trapped in the car, and paramedics tried to stabilise him while fire and rescue workers spent half an hour cutting him free.

“When he was eventually freed, as he was being safely pulled from the vehicle, his heart suddenly stopped beating. Paramedics immediately initiated cardio pulmonary resuscitation [CPR], and after 10 minutes his heart started beating again.”

He was critically injured.

A man believed to be in his fifties died after he was knocked down by a taxi and dragged for about 10 metres in a Pietermaritzburg parking lot yesterday afternoon.

Jackson said the man had just walked out of a tavern on Retief Street when a taxi knocked him over. He was declared dead on the scene.

“According to bystanders, the taxi carried on driving for approximately 10 metres through the parking lot, dragging the man under the taxi, before the driver got out to check what he had hit,” Jackson said.

Police took the taxi driver in for questioning.

Two people died and five others were injured after a head-on collision between two cars on the M1 Higginson Highway, Arena Park, in Chatsworth during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said a light motor vehicle with four passengers was driving against the normal flow of traffic on the west-bound carriageway when it collided with a bakkie. The driver and front passenger of the light motor vehicle were killed on impact, Wicks said.
