THE man behind the wheel of one of the vehicles involved in the accident in Nongoma on Saturday that claimed eight lives, was charged with culpable homicide.

Mqapheli Mnyandu (22) allegedly fled the accident scene where two vehicles collided, but later turned himself in. He appeared in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Hlobane police station commander Captain Johannes Mncwango said the accused had seven days in which to apply for bail.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), through a search of national traffic management system e-Natis, earlier confirmed Mnyandu doesn’t have a driver’s licence.

The Witness reported that Mnyandu was driving a Ford sedan with three passengers when he was involved in a collision with a stationary Nissan bakkie carrying seven passengers, four of whom were high school pupils. All seven of the bakkie’s occupants, who were returning from a wedding, died.

Mnyandu and one of his passengers were taken to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Hlobane said he had met with the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu earlier on Monday and visited several of the victims’ families. No funeral date has been set yet.
