Driver escapes from boot as gunman hijacks taxi

2011-08-24 00:00

POLICE are appealing for help to trace a man wanted in connection with the hijacking of a metered taxi on Monday, August 15

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the taxi driver, John Edward, was sent to collect a fare in College Road at about 10 pm.

The man asked Edward (43) to take him to Khan Road in Northdale, and on route requested that Edward stop at a petrol station.

While they drove through Alexandra Park, it is alleged, the man demanded cash from Edward at gunpoint, said Jeevan.

The passenger took the keys and ordered Edward to get into the boot of the car, but he managed to free himself and escaped.

His car was recovered at the corner of Miller Road and Geere Road in Imbali the next day. Nothing had been stolen and the keys were still in the ignition.

Anyone who may know the whereabouts of the man should call investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Bheka Ngubane on 033 845 7802 or 073 316 8359.

Anonymous callers can phone Crime Stop toll free at 08600 10111.
