Driver kills pedestrian, stops short of pool

2014-09-11 00:00

A TRAGIC trail of events yesterday started with a pedestrian being hit and ended in a motorist coming to a stop centimetres before plunging into a pool.

It appears a car travel-ling down Main Road in Malvern, Pinetown fatally hit a pedestrian, before leaving the road and crashing into a light pole. He then crashed through a wall of a townhouse, before coming to a stop just over the edge of a swimming pool in the yard.

Paramedics from KZN EMS and private ambulance services responded to the scene, which occurred just before 3 pm. They declared the man, who was estimated to be about 50 years old, dead on the scene, EMRS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said.

The driver, a man in his 40s, was critically injured and trapped in the crumpled vehicle. The car came to rest with its front wheel hanging over the edge of the swimming pool. Paramedics from a private ambulance service treated the driver on the scene.

The fire department then had isolated the live electrical wires from the damaged light pole. Police are investigating.
