THE body of Nkosinathi Khumalo, the Pietermaritzburg matric pupil who drowned at a Durban beach, has been recovered.

Khumalo (18) drowned during a school outing at Durban’s South beach on Saturday morning.

Khumalo and his fellow pupils from Longside Combined School in Elandskop went swimming when disaster struck.

The 20 pupils arrived in Durban on Friday night and woke up early on Saturday morning for a swim. They had planned to spend the day celebrating after participating in their matric dance the night before.

Police yesterday found Khumalo’s body, which had washed up on shore at Umhlanga’s main beach.

Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu said Khumalo’s body was taken to the Phoenix mortuary where his family identified it.

“The family is very distraught over the loss of their loved one. They will take the body back to Pietermaritzburg where the funeral will be held,” he said.
