Drug bust ‘key’ hands himself over

2009-09-19 00:00

A SUSPECT, wanted in connection with the R600-million Durban drug bust, handed himself to the organised crime unit yesterday.

This comes after five men appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on drug trafficking charges relating to a R600 million drug bust by the elite Hawks.

Gopaul Ganesh, Morgan Nadasen, Paul Beazley, John Beazley and Paul (no surname given) made a brief appearance in court after they were arrested on Monday afternoon by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks).

The Hawks found 800 tons of drugs with a street value of R600 million in a warehouse in Phoenix, north of Durban. Another five kilograms of drugs were found in a house in La Lucia.

Police believe that the man (50) is the key suspect in the drug syndicate operating in SA and the UK. Hawks spokesman Musa Zondi said police were tracking the suspect down when he handed himself over. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, while another suspect has been arrested in the UK on related charges.

Zondi said the drugs were imported from an unknown country and police now know that one of the destinations for the illicit product was the United Kingdom.

“They were exported in battery casings or disguised as curios. Investigations continue and police expect more arrests,” he said.
