Drug case: Cwele back at work

2010-02-10 00:00

SHERYL Cwele, the wife of the State Security minister, who was released on R100 000 bail last week on charges of trafficking in drugs, reported for work on Monday.

Hibiscus Coast municipal manager Sbu Mkhize confirmed yesterday that Cwele, who is a director of health and community services in the council, was back at work.

An executive committee meeting was held at the municipality last week at which it was decided that Cwele’s continued absence from work will be treated as unpaid leave, since she has exhausted her leave days.

Councillors told The Witness last Friday that a meeting will be held between the mayor, the speaker and Mkhize to map a way forward on the decision the council should take regarding Cwele’s matter.

However, councillors said that a report has not been received about that meeting.

They said it is unclear whether or not the meeting took place.

DA leader in the council Doug Rawlins said the party believes Cwele is back at work because she is out on bail.

Councillors said that even if Cwele is suspended, she will still be paid, as that is the council’s policy.
