Drug mule accused asks to do her time in SA jail

IF she had known what her daughter was planning, she would have stopped her.

But she does not doubt for a second that alleged drug mule Laura Cilliers (32), who is now in prison in New Zealand, only wanted to make a better life for her family.

Cilliers’s mother Laura Vermaak is heartbroken since her daughter was found with 1,2 kg of heroin at Christchurch Airport on June 15, after she had landed from Singapore.

On Thursday, Cilliers admitted to a magistrate’s court she had hidden 100 packages of heroin in her body before entering the country, according to the New Zealand Herald.

“My husband died a year-and-a-half ago and Laura looked after me. I so badly want her back in the country, but who will help me? I do not have the money,” Vermaak said. “My heart is so sore I cannot sleep! I would have stopped her, but now it is too late.

“Laura phoned me this week to say she wants to come home. She wants to serve her sentence in South Africa. I wish she can return,” Vermaak said.

Her case was postponed to August 20. “We will do all that we can to get her back,” Vermaak said.
