Drugs: two to stay in custody

2013-11-11 00:00

TWO people charged with unlawful possession of R6,5 million worth of drugs, Lindy Walker (28) and Abel du Plessis (29), remain in custody after they were unable to raise bail of R100 000 each.

A third suspect, Sibongile Mthembu (36), was not granted bail after the three appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court last week.

Their bail hearing was finalised on Thursday. Police had opposed bail and led evidence for two days to prevent bail from being granted, a police statement said.

The case has been adjourned until December 11 to allow police to conduct further investigation.

The organised crime unit and customs officials at King Shaka International Airport arrested Walker and Du Plessis on October 22 in a sting operation shortly after they landed on a flight from India.

Police allegedly found 36 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Tik) with a street value of about R6,5 million in their luggage.

In a follow-up operation, 36-year-old Mthembu was arrested at the Point area in Durban, where she allegedy was awaiting delivery of the drugs.
