Drunk Driving: ‘Drive dry’ firm donates R50 000

2012-07-11 00:00

A DONATION of R50 000 from Brandhouse to South Africans against Drunk Driving (SADD) this week would enable the organisation to widen its campaign, said SADD director Caro Smit.

The donation from the alcohol beverage company’s “drive dry” campaign would “enhance SADD’s capacity to continue with the good work we started with the A lcohol, Drink Driving and Road Safety School Manual, said Smit. “It has gone into 2 500 schools in South Africa so far.”

SADD would use the donation to create more awareness about alcohol abuse and drink driving by designing a smaller manual aimed at hospitals, particularly casualty units. This would help to educate doctors, nurses and paramedics about blood and breath-alcohol content, the law on drunk driving, safer alcohol use, diagnosis and where to refer people for alcohol education and treatment.

Smit said alcohol abuse by young people was worrying and SADD was asking doctors to refer patients with alcohol poisoning or problems with excessive alcohol use to be sent for treatment.
