Drunk driver fined R50 000

THE Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court has handed down another stiff sentence to a drunk driver, fining Mfanafuthi Mbhele R50 000 and suspending his driver’s licence for six months.

The court found Mbhele guilty of driving with a blood-alcohol level of 1,42 mg per 1 000 ml on the N2 near Park Rynie on the south coast on March 5.

Transport Department spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said he “stunned the court when he produced cash of R25 000, which he had prepared to pay for his freedom”.

On July 10, the same court fined Kyle Hudson R45 000 for driving with a blood-alcohol level of 1,04 mg per 1 000 ml on the N2 near Scottburgh on March 22.

“The Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court is setting an example that drunken driving can never be tolerated,” said Mngomezulu.

Caro Smit, founder of South Africans Against Drunk Driving (Sadd), said the penalty “is wonderful”, but noted the law allows fines of up to R120 000. “The six months [of suspended licences] should make these people think deeply about their lives.”

This, she said, should encourage them to get alcohol addiction treatment.
