Duma takes top spot in Capital Climb

2011-08-22 00:00

SIBONELA Duma once more made his way to the podium in the 15 km Witness Capital Climb on Saturday morning.

The talented and tough Boxer club athlete broke away from the field to lead through the top of World’s View with a 200 metre lead over the chasing group that included Munja Jari, Lindani Zuma and Prodigal Khumalo.

Duma used the free-fall descent down to the Voortrekker High School to extend his lead, crossing the line in a useful 52 minutes 12 seconds, almost 600 metres ahead of Bluff Formula One’s Jari, who was chased home by Boxer’s Zuma. Duma has been a consistent podium placer over the past years and has honed his strategy to perfection.

Thuso Mosiea of the Escom Gijimas missed the podium by 50 metres with Mr Price’s Khumalo in fifth.

It was gun to tape for Collegians Harriers Kristan Williams, who took the award for first to World’s View and the first place in one hour three minutes 55 seconds, with over half a kilometre in hand over Nedbank’s Cary Ann Smith.

Williams’s Collegians club mate, Sarah Grey, filled the final podium place well off the pace in one hour 10 minutes and 10 seconds, while Susan Oberholzer of the Run/Walk for Life impressed with a fourth and beat many of her juniors by taking first in the 50 to 59 age group in one hour 14 minutes 11 seconds.

The popular challenge through the Pietermaritzburg landmark attracted over 1 100 runners, over 700 of whom were recreational and lifestyle runners.
