Dumping: firm to face legal action

2011-09-16 00:00

UMNGENI Municipality has vowed to take legal action against the illegal dumping of frozen chickens on a private farm.

People from Merrivale in Howick, who were passing by the farm, were picking up frozen chickens to take home to eat.

It is alleged that on Monday the company, whose name is known to The Witness, dumped frozen chickens that had passed their sell-by date on the private farm.

The farmer, Nick Huston, said the dumping is a huge environmental issue and could spread disease.

“It is sad that people would pick up these frozen chickens and eat them while they don’t know the consequences of taking them,” he added.

Huston said he does not know who dumped the chickens.

Acting municipal manager Sandile Buthelezi confirmed that the environmental health section of the municipality investigated the illegal dumping of chickens at a private farm on Tuesday.

“A notice was served immediately on this company to remove and dispose of them by incineration.

“This was complied with on the same day.

“The municipality is pursuing further legal action against this company.”

Buthelezi encouraged people to report similar incidents.
