Durban July’s unofficial ‘race’

2013-07-03 00:00

WITH the Durban July on this weekend, Sportingbet South Africa have rounded up 10 top sporting media personalities to compete in a hashtag-driven virtual horse race today at noon.

This is all part of Sportingbet SA’s Unofficial Durban July 14th Race, done for their #BeTheStud charity initiative. The “race” begins at noon, and for an hour the contenders will be enticing their Twitter followers to tweet and retweet their horse’s #name and #BeTheStud to drive their horses towards the number of mentions needed to win the race.

The top three winners will get R10 000, R3 500 and R1 500 respectively to give to the charity of their choice. The contenders are from various publications, radio stations, television and blogs, and include 5FM’s Sias du Plessis,’s Lance Witten and Ballz’ Sasha Martinengo. All the contenders have their own horse names that they will race with.

“We are very lucky to have secured such high-profile names for Sportingbet’s Unofficial Durban July 14th Race,” says Scott Canny, marketing manager of Sportingbet. “We hope that the public helps them to support these worthy causes.”

The final field has some strong favourites. Du Plessis’s horse name #RedFury and Martinengo’s horse name #BallzToTheWallz appear to be clear frontrunners, purely based on the number of followers they have on Twitter. However, the Unofficial 14th Race is a “handicapped” race, so those with the most followers will have to reach a higher number of mentions than those with fewer.
