Durban: Two ‘vagrants’held for rape

2011-04-22 00:00

TWO “vagrants” were formally charged yesterday evening for raping a 24-year-old Shark rugby team supporter in a stormwater drain along Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue early this month.

A private investigator, Brad Nathanson, said the two men, who are aged 24 and 23 years old, were arrested in Blue Lagoon, Durban North, at about 5 pm on Tuesday.

“We found them in Blue Lagoon parking cars and we arrested them. They are not car guards, but just vagrants or skhothenis. They tried to give us a hard time as one of them tried to run away, but it is okay because we got them.

“Right now they are being charged with rape, assault GBH and theft,” Nathanson told The Witness yesterday evening.

Prior to the attack, the victim was celebrating the Sharks’ win over the Lions at Berea Rovers pub near Kings Park Stadium on the evening of April 9.

She later walked along Masabalala Yengwa Avenue to a friend’s house.

After she was raped and assaulted, a motorist helped her to reach Durban Central police station to report the matter.

Her family hired Nathanson to conduct a private investigation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mdunge confirmed that the men were arrested by the private investigator.
