Durban: Woman vagrant fleeing police killed by passing train

2011-02-02 00:00

A WOMAN fleeing from the police was knocked down and killed by a train near Albert Park in Durban yesterday.

The Durban Metro Police with the Durban Solid Waste Unit and Maydon Wharf South African Police Force conducted a clean-up operation at the corner of Khuzimpi Shezi Road (Williams Road), and the on- ramp to the Southern Freeway (M4), close to Albert Park.

They had been tipped off that vagrants were harassing motorists and robbing passing pedestrians.

The vagrants were also alleged to have been selling and smoking the dangerous drug called Whoonga

When police arrived at the scene, the vagrants scattered in different directions.

A woman aged about 25 ran on to the railway line and was knocked down by a moving train and died instantly.

Metro Police spokesperson n Eugene Msomi said that it had come to the police’s attention that young people were loitering around at that spot and engaging in unacceptable behaviour.

He urged parents to ensure that they know their children’s whereabouts at all times as this would help stop them becoming vagrants.
