Durban ambo hijack slammed

2014-10-27 00:00

AN ambulance was hijacked south of Durban yesterday.

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department condemned in the strongest possible terms the hijacking of an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance in KwaMakhutha township.

The EMS vehicle, with two crew members, was transporting two patients from KwaMakhutha Clinic to hospital.

The ambulance was flagged down by two men under the pretext that one of them was a patient and needed attention.

The driver stopped the vehicle and got out, but as he approached the two men, it is alleged they held him up at gunpoint and forced the crew members to get into the back of the vehicle.

One of them was able to escape and hid away.

The hijackers drove the ambulance towards KwaMakhutha before abandoning it and fleeing.

There have been no arrests.

Neither the patients nor the paramedics were injured during the incident.
