Durban chefs to compete in national contest

2010-02-13 00:00

TWO Durban chefs are preparing to cook up a feast in a quest to scoop the prestigious Chef of the Year title.

Michelle Barry, principal of the Christina Martin School of Food and Wine, and Nicholas Froneman, executive chef at Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel, will compete against four other chefs for the R40 000 cash prize.

For the past five years Unilever Foodsolutions has invited six of South Africa’s leading chefs to compete in its exclusive By Invitation Only Competition.

Froneman, who has worked in Egypt, Singapore and Tanzania, is inspired by fresh, uncomplicated food and excellent ingredients.

He spends almost 16 hours a day in the kitchen, experimenting with different flavours and cooking methods.

Barry is already a winner, having won the Goldcrest Chef of the Year national competition in 2001 and, four years later, the Fedhasa Restaurant of the Year Award

She is inspired by her colleagues and reads cook books and gleans ideas from websites.

“We share a brotherhood, knowledge and having the opportunity to work with wonderful food produce in South Africa,” she said.
