Durban derby is the match

2010-11-06 00:00

THE 2010 school’s cricket season is fast drawing to a close, with only 16 schools scheduled to play next Saturday, so many will be playing their last match today.

Maritzburg College did the right thing by arranging a day-night fixture against Michaelhouse, anticipating that they would be short today when the rest of the school has fixtures against Michaelhouse.

St Charles did not do the same so they will be without two regulars, including captain Gareth Dukes, who is also in the KwaZulu-Natal Inland under-19 side, who started a three-day game against Free State in Bloemfontein yesterday.

St Charles travel to play against Westville and although weakened, coach Dave Karlsen sees it as an opportunity to blood some youngsters before next year. Westville was held to a tie by Clifton. Last Saturday Clifton was given a hiding by St Charles.

Westville and St Charles have both had disappointing seasons mirroring one another. If the Maritzburg lads can build further on the improvement shown last week, particularly in their bowling, it may be possible to beat the full-strength Westville team.

In Durban, the fixture between long-standing rivals from across the Berea — DHS and Glenwood — could be the match to watch. Glenwood with a comprehensive nine-wicket win in a home fixture during the first term will possibly feel the more confident.

This term DHS have generally played the better cricket, they have home ground advantage and they did beat Glenwood in the 20-20 match, so they could be seen as favourites to reverse the first term result.

Hilton, buoyed by their win last week against College, host Kearsney, the only side who have not yet lost against another KZN team. The visitors will want to maintain this record. The middle order will need to step up the pace to ensure a better batting display.

For Hilton to beat the two top teams in the province in two successive weeks will, however, be unlikely.

Selected fixtures (home side first):

Westville vs St Charles, DHS vs Glenwood, Hilton vs Kearsney, Clifton vs Thomas More, Grantleigh vs St Henrys, Howick vs Voortrekker, Carter vs MCS (at the Duckpond), Treverton vs Wartburg.
