ASPIRING chef Savannah Ashworth from Umhlanga is taking her passion for food national after winning the Ultimate School Cook-off in Durban.

Savannah (16), a pupil at Danville Park Girls’ High, said she was ecstatic after finding out that she had won the regional part of the national competition. “I was really surprised and honoured, because this is the career path I would like to take,” she said.

She was up against nine other contestants in the competition, hosted by the International Hotel School in Durban, and caught the attention of the judges with her poached chicken stuffed with brie, with a side of mash and broccoli covered in a herb butter.

Her meal was rounded off with a chocolate mousse tart.

“I did not get to see the judges’ reaction, but they must have really enjoyed it,” she said. Savannah, who picked up her passion for cooking from watching TV cooking shows and her mom, said her chef role model is Jamie Oliver.

“His methods are amazing,” she said.

“My favourite food is a passion fruit cheesecake which I make. It has a biscuit base with cream cheese mixed with passion fruit filling, topped with piped cream and passion fruit.”

For this round, Savannah won a bursary to study the one-year Culinary Arts programme at the International Hotel School, along with being crowned “Best School Chef” for the region.

She will now compete in the finals against the other two regionals winners from Sandton and Cape Town, on October 4.
