PROFESSOR Salim Abdool Karim, who is currently in the U.S., and his wife Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim were among those honoured at the city’s second annual Wenze Kahle mayoral breakfast ceremony.

Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, an associate scientific director of the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in SA (Caprisa) is the recipient of the 2013 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Prize for Science and Technology.

Recently, Caprisa and U.S. Aids researchers identified the antibodies in a KwaZulu-Natal woman’s blood and then duplicated them by cloning the antibodies in the laboratory. The broadly neutralising antibodies were able to kill multiple strains of HIV.

Karim said she was delighted by the municipality’s gesture and that the acknowledgement meant a lot.

“This means that Durbanites can do work that can change people’s lives,” she said, adding that she hopes that her achievements will inspire other young girls to pursue science.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo who were not present, were also honoured by the city for their contribution to music in KZN and beyond.
