2010-12-01 00:00

FOURTEEN employees of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Durban have been suspended or fired for various forms of serious misconduct.

This was disclosed yesterday although the disciplinary action against the hospital’s employees were taken between 2008 and 2009.

Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said three employees were found guilty of bribery, two of fraud and corruption, one of theft, three of absenteeism, one of fraud, two of negligence and two others of assault.

The Democratic Alliance, which raised the matter in a parliamentary question, welcomed the move.

Said DA MPL George Mari, “Mahatma Gandhi appears to have had a positive turnaround ... We will continue to monitor events at Mahatma Gandhi in an effort to ensure that hospital management continue to run a tight ship.”
