Durban tale of romance and rotis

2007-11-21 00:00

Sumayya Lee's book could easily be dismissed as “chick lit” - after all, the subtitle describes it as a “spunky tale of romance, rotis and unsuitable boys”.

However, the story delves deeper and deals with weightier issues such as race, class, sectionalism and growing up in a conservative Muslim home in Durban. But make no mistake, this is no heavy read, as Lee has a flowing, easy writing style.

Where the book falls short is that some of the situations seem contrived. There are also parts where the dialogue is in Durban slang. This was no problem for me as I know the lingo, but I'm not sure how it will work for readers less familiar with these coloquialisms.

Overall these are minor flaws and The Story of Maha as Lee's first book shows a promising writer in the making.
