TWO people died at Quarry Road West near Sydenham, Durban, when about 200 shacks caught fire there in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said yesterday that the cause of the fire, which started just after midnight, is unknown.

“Two people are confirmed to have died in the fire. One was a 35-year-old man who was seen to be drunk before the fire.

“It is believed that he could not escape the fire, and he was burned beyond recognition. The other person remains unidentified,” said Mdunge.

A spokesperson for the Durban Fire Station, Alfred Newman, said allegations are that a drunk resident had left had left a candle burning.

“Three fire engines and two water carriers were dispatched to the area,” said Newman. The fire took an hour to douse.
