Dusi draws in estimated R46 mln

TOURISM KwaZulu-Natal welcomed a total of over 2 000 national and international canoeists to the Zulu Kingdom at the start of yesterday’s Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon, which is recognised as one of the big five sporting events in South Africa.

Tourism KZN’s CEO, Ndabo Khoza, said that it is exciting for the province to be able to host SA’s largest canoe ultra-marathon, and that the event is expected to generate in excess of R46 million as a result of tourism spend in the local economy.

Khoza said that it was pleasing to note that the number of international canoeists is growing due to the robust marketing drive of the event organisers and sponsors such as TKZN.

Race spokesman Ray De Vries said they attracted more than 100 international competitors to this year’s race.

De Vries said this signified that the number of overall entries has

not increased on a par with international participation as a growing segment.

"This bodes well for the future marketing initiatives that we will agree on in the future, as the momentum has already started," De Vries said.

A total of about 2 000 paddlers and 3 600 seconders, supporters, accredited media, nearly 1 000 volunteers, medical staff and thousands of spectators are expected along the route, over the three-day Dusi Marathon period.
