E.Cape: council members brawl

2009-08-14 00:00

GOVERNANCE and Traditional Affairs Minister Sicelo Shiceka is poised to crack the whip at two Eastern Cape municipalities following fights for positions that led to punch-ups and stabbings at meetings.

Shiceka has written to Eastern Cape Local Government MEC Sicelo Gqobhane asking for an explanation of reported discord at Ingquza Local Municipality (which incorporates Flagstaff and Lusikisiki) and Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality in Port Elizabeth.

The fights have left seven councillors injured, two with stab wounds that required hospital treatment.

In Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, councillors suspended municipal manager Graham Richards, who is reported to be a highly experienced manager, with councillors reportedly preferring a junior manager.
