EP, SWD in for a tough clash at Craven Week

2014-07-19 00:00

THE performances of the Eastern Province and SWD Eagles eighthmen will be key in today’s main match of the 51st Craven Week’s final day in Middelburg at 12.45 pm.

The Eagles last featured in the main match in 2008 in Pretoria and their captain and number eight, CJ Stander, says that they are inspired by that year’s 31-25 victory over Free State.

The Springboks’ Dewald Potgtieter was Eastern Province’s captain in 2005 when they went down to the Lions in the final match of the week 15-38, and you’d have to go back as far as 1979 to find the last time that EP were victorious in the main game of Craven Week.

Then it was the battle of the quarterbacks with Derick Hougaard (Boland) and Nel Fourie (Pumas) squaring off. The Pumas won that nail-biting clash 19-18.

This is the first time since 2000 that none of South Africa’s so-called Big Five will play in the main game.

It is also the first final since 2010 that will not feature the Lions.
