EP in command against KZN Inland

2010-03-19 00:00

EASTERN Province had the better of day one of the three-day Provincial Challenge against KZN Inland at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

Inland opener Mario Olivier (37*) and first wicket Glen Addicott return today with Inland 245 runs in arrears in the first innings.

EP, top of the log by 15 points, made sure of winning the title in this their last match, one would think, when they rattled up 312 for five in their allotted 85 overs in the first innings, this after Inland had won the toss.

Riaan Jeggels hit an unbeaten century (104*, 126b, 8x4, 5x6) in very good time, and was devastating on anything loose.

Pite van Biljon (76, 130b, 11x4) and Kelly Smuts (75, 146b, 11x4) hit sedate seventies, adding 119 for the second in setting up the perfect platform for Jeggels to slam his maiden first-class ton. The 28-year-old PE native, in his sixth season in the first-class game, has flattered only to deceive at times, and this might be the moment when he kicks on to bigger and better things.

For Inland, there was little cheer, although Richard Hlela, who is used extremely sparingly for a frontline bowler, did at least get 11 overs this time, and picked up the talented Sean Adair and Smuts for 38 off 11. Scott Tarr (former Howick High boy) had reasonable figures on first-class debut.

Tarr’s fellow debutant, Maritzburg Varsity’s Cheslyn Nhlapo, did well to add 49 for the first wicket with Olivier. Today is going to be a big day for the Inland batsmen.

Meanwhile, at United Cricket Club in East London, KZN Coastal are in the prime seats, going into day two with a 103-run lead and eight second innings wickets still intact, in a match that could be over today.

Coastal first-class debutants Shaun Simpson (former College boy) and Matthew Boote (ex-St Charles) scored 48 (102b, 7x4) and 20 respectively in the first innings.
