Eagles’ untimely tumble sees Lions into semis

2010-02-22 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN — The Highveld Lions edged into the semi-finals of the Standard Bank Pro20 after they claimed a narrow two-run victory over the Diamond Eagles in Bloemfontein yesterday, to reach the semi-finals.

After being put into bat, the Lions scored 184 for six and the home side fell agonisingly short on 182 for seven, despite an excellent innings of 74 off 51 balls from Morne van Wyk.

The right-handed Van Wyk bludgeoned eight fours and a six during his knock and he shared in a second-wicket stand of 67 runs with Dean Elgar (30), and a thirdwicket partnership of 66 with Ryan Bailey (34).

Bailey and Van Wyk looked to have given their team a great chance of pulling off the victory as the Eagles reached 149 for two in the 17th over.

However, their dismissal in quick succession saw the Eagles go into free fall as they lost five wickets for the addition of just 18 runs.

The home side began the last over needing 19 runs to win, and despite two sixes from Reeza Hendricks, they could not claw their way to victory.

The Lions’ total was built around a half-century from Jonathan Vandiar, who slashed his way to 56 off 40 balls with his knock including four fours and three sixes.

The left-handed Vandiar and debutant Richard Cameron (36) put on 52 runs for the second wicket before Vaughn van Jaarsveld (37) and Vandiar smashed 68 runs for the third wicket off just 5.5 overs.

The Lions will now face the Nashua Titans in the semis.
