Easterns hold the edge against Inland in Benoni

2011-02-19 00:00

THE Provincial Three-Day Challenge match between Easterns and KZN Inland at Willowmoore Park in Benoni sees the home side in the better position to press for a win on the final day today.

Yesterday Inland were dismissed for 206 in reply to Easterns’ first-day 209 all out.

At the close, Easterns were on 155 for five in their second innings for an overall lead of 158.

The Pietermaritzburg lads had all-rounder and debutant Darryn Mortimer (33 off 50 balls with six fours and a six) and fast bowler Kimeshan Chetty to thank for rescuing them from a parlous 157 for eight to draw close to parity in the first innings.

In their second dig Easterns’ batsmen got in and then got out — as has happened throughout the match and once again it was Howick High School Old Boy Mortimer who caught the eye with another set of impressive bowling figures.

Although not out of it yet, Inland will need something special to pull this one off.

The 40-over match is tomorrow.
