Easterns on top of Inland after day one

2010-01-08 00:00

EASTERNS, the Cricket SA Provincial Challenge three-day competition log-leaders, were 109 runs behind second-last KZN Inland with seven first-innings wickets in hand after the first day at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday. Easterns won the toss and elected to field, a good toss to lose according to Inland coach Doug Watson, who said: “We would have batted anyway”.

However, too many batsmen looked set — Ollie Humphries (57), Brad Moses (41), Tim Drummond (46) and Mbasa Gqadushe (30) before getting out and it was reflected in Inland’s 259 all out with 20 more overs to earn batting points wasted.

Leg-spin kingpin Imran Tahir picked up yet another fifer for Easterns and the nature of his dismissals confirmed that Inland battled to pick his wrong ‘un. However, Ollie Humphries — promoted from around eight to open with great effect – can be justifiably proud of how he handled a man who now has 424 first-class wickets to his name. The 30-year-old who hails from Pakistan also has 117 limited-over scalps already notched on his belt and he will again be a major threat in Sunday’s 40-over bash.

Easterns replied with a bright 150 for three at stumps, nearly five to the over, although Inland were jubilant when three wickets were lost with the total 55 thanks to Narvaar Harridave and Kyle Nipper.

Still, Jaco Booysen and Tumelo Mosehle’s 95-run partnership in next to no time needs to be stymied first thing today to get Inland back in the game.

In Oudtshoorn, KZN Coastal are in deep trouble against South Western Districts, who are just 51 runs in arrears on the first innings with eight wickets still intact.

It seems scarcely believable that a lightweight province can have their heavyweight counterparts in such trouble.

Maybe it’s new SWD coach Garry Hampson, the former all-rounder and more recently manager of playing affairs at KZN Inland, who is wielding the magic wand?
