Eastwood warehouse gutted

2014-05-19 00:00

A NAPPY warehouse in the Eastwood industrial area was gutted in a fire that burned for several hours yesterday.

Msunduzi firefighters struggled to put out the blaze, which started just after 5 pm, as they could not get inside the building.

Fire operations manager Essack Khan said they resorted to fighting the fire through the windows.

Khan, who deployed 25 firefighters and several vehicles to the scene, said it will take at least a day or two to be sure that the fire has been completely extinguished, as they need to get inside the building to check for smouldering embers.

“One of the difficulties is that this place, which is being used as a warehouse, is overstocked.

“Some of the material is stocked as far as the ceiling, which is making it had to put the fire out,” he said.

“We cannot get inside because all the exits and entry points are blocked, so we have to put the fire out from outside. If the stock in this place had been packaged according to the law, we would not be having this difficulty.”

Khan said they did not know the cause of the fire at this stage.

The owner of the business was too distraught to speak to The Witness. “I do not know what happened. I received a call from the security guard to tell me this has happened,” he said, refusing to give his name.
