Eating healthily naturally

2009-03-31 00:00

There aren’t many household names in the health industry in South Africa, but Mary Ann Shearer is one of them. Even my local Spar stocks her foods. She made a name for herself with the publication of her original Natural Way in 1991, where she outlined theories learnt through years of personal research as she tried to find relief from an array of ailments.

These ideas are not original: that a diet of mostly raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and other whole foods will provide you with all your body needs, while proper food combining — not eating proteins and carbohydrates together — will ensure that food is digested and absorbed efficiently. It’s all pretty sound stuff. There’s enough research data available to suggest that if you follow such a diet you will feel much better, although most of us will find it too Spartan to follow.

Shearer acknowledges this, even counselling readers not to be too hard on themselves if they fall off the wagon and to allow themselves “treat days” when they can eat forbidden foods.

Even if you don’t intend giving up your roast with potatoes, there’s still a mountain of valuable information in this book, as well as a selection of recipes to accompany this lifestyle.
