Eclectic jazz infusions

CAIPHUS Semenya, Hugh Masekela, Zahara, Lira, Nhlanhla Nciza, Judith Sephuma and Teargas are some of the names who are all going to be on the same stage on Boxing Day for the MTN Durban Jazz Festival, to be held at Hazelmere Dam.

The line-up for the concert showcases “the richness of our music culture”, says festival director Lindelani Mkhize.

Legendary artists Caiphus Semenya and Hugh Masekela make up the true sounds of soft jazz, after which the music will segue to the Afro-centric sounds of Thandiswa Mazwai, Lira, Nhlanhla Nciza and Judith Sephuma.

Then it’s the artist who boasts a record-breaking 300 000 sales since her debut into the local music scene this past August — Zahara (below, right), who will be performing her hit single Loliwe as she graces the stage.

She will be followed by another crowd favourite, Zakes Bantwini, who returns to the platform that launched his musical career just a few years ago. This award-winning artist will be joined on stage by the BET Awards-nominated hip-hop act, Teargas.

As it is customary at the MTN Durban Jazz Festival, it will also play host to five up-and-coming artists, featuring Nkulee Dube, Heels Over Head, Malini and Xolisa Dlamini.

For the night revellers, the music will shift to the floor-filling beats of DJ Bongs and DJ Muntu, who will entertain the audience until the break of dawn.

From cool and laid-back afternoon music to the refreshingly foot-stomping sounds of the summer, audiences are in for a real treat as the organisers promise a world of entertainment for families, couples and fun-seeking individuals.

A warning about tickets — fake ticket holders will be arrested, says Hazel Chimhadamba, Manager of Music and Lifestyle Sponsorships at MTN SA. Tickets to the MTN Durban Jazz Festival retail for: R200 (general) and R250 (golden circle). Parking costs R100.

Tickets can be purchased from Computicket and Shoprite Checkers outlets, and parking tickets can be purchased at Petra Port. So pack your picnic baskets and head over to Hazelmere Dam this Boxing Day.

Gates will open at 9 am, and patrons are urged to leave early to avoid traffic. For further information on the festival, visit: www.dbnjazzfest.co.za also the facebook group: www.face book.com/dbnjazzfestival
