Edendale Mall: Tenant robbed of cash for second time in less than two Months

2012-06-05 00:00

ARMED robbers hit a Greater Edendale Mall tenant for the second time in less than two months yesterday morning.

The robbers made off with R56 000 after holding up an employee of the Foschini Group of stores, according to information collected at the mall.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident, saying employee Thabani Zondi (27) had been doing a routine collection of money at the company’s shops for banking when a gang of 10 people confronted him.

“It is alleged that one of the suspects assaulted Zondi with the butt of his firearm multiple times on the back of his head, seriously wounding him,” she said.

They stripped him of a money bag with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a grey Opel Corsa and a blue Volkswagen Caravelle minibus.

“Zondi was taken by private transport to Edendale Hospital for treatment,” she said.

On April 29 the Exact store owned by Foschini was robbed of undisclosed sum of money.

Staff at the mall now fear for their safety, saying they are worried there might be further attacks.

“This is the second time this has happened in less than two months,” one worker said.

The mall’s spokesperson, Thobeka Zimu, said the first robbery happened minutes before closing time on the afternoon of April 29.

“The second robbery is currently under investigation and we cannot say too much about it as yet,” she said.

“Other than that, there is a concern that the same tenant was targeted in both robberies and that there are some anomalies that are being investigated in the recent robbery.”

Zimu said the mall’s management had already approved the installation of vehicle access controls to be put in by the end of June.

These included boom gates and “tyre-teeth” that will immediately prevent any car from leaving the mall when an incident is reported.

Plessislaer police are urgently appealing to anyone who can assist with information.

Anyone with information should contact Detective-Colonel Gopz Govender at 033 398 9752 or 082 7797 141, or they can call Crime Stop anonymously and toll-free at 08600 10111.
