Edendale school gets fully equipped computer lab

2014-09-08 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG’S Nyonithwele Secondary School has become the latest beneficiary of a public-private partnership in the information and technology sector to get a computer laboratory.

The school, which is situated in Edendale, has been given a fully equipped computer lab as part of the Departments of Education and Public Works and the South African Breweries (SAB).

The laboratory is complete with 60 computers, air-conditioners, cabling, printers and a year’s pre-paid Internet subscription. It will benefit over 1 000 Grade 10 to 12 pupils as well as more than 40 teaching staff and community members.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said the lab will assist in increasing access to Internet connectivity and empower the community through information access.

“This is the anomaly that we must address working together with various stakeholders with the interest of the African child in mind, especially those from the working class and poor,” Nzimande said.

“Edendale is largely a poor community with schools mainly being under the category of no-fee schools. There is no doubt that this state-of-the-art computer laboratory will be a great leveller in the information services to pupils and by extension to community.”
