Editor escapes injury after being run off the road

2011-04-27 00:00

THE editor of Fever Newspaper Group’s Eastern Cape edition, Greg Nota, had a brush with death on Monday evening when he was forced off the road by an ANC candidate in the Bhobhoyi area just outside Port Shepstone.

On his way to a friend’s birthday party with five passengers — three in the back and two in the front — Nota escaped unscathed from the flattened vehicle.

Two of his passengers were not so lucky.

They were hospitalised — one with internal injuries and another with a serious head and leg injuries.

Nota, who was back at his desk the next day, said the ANC candidate, Bheka Cele, was driving in the middle of the road and refused to budge on a narrow dirt lane.

“I veered left to avoid him and flipped the van three times before it came to a stop, on its roof.

“I braced myself for the worst as I crept out the van, but thankfully everyone survived the ordeal,” said Nota.

Nota said Cele, who was returning from an ANC-organised soccer game, stopped briefly and then was on his way again.

Attempts to reach Cele for comment at the time of going to press were unsuccessful.
