Eight die as bakkie, truck collide

2012-08-20 00:00

A HORRIFIC road accident on the R66 near Ulundi on Friday night claimed the lives of eight people, including two children.

According to KZN Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane, the occupants of the bakkie were apparently on their way to a church service in Newcastle.

He said a silver GWM bakkie and a truck collided at about 6:30 pm on Friday, resulting in the loss of eight lives.

“It is believed that one driver lost control. Occupants were mainly from the bakkie,” said Ncalane.

He added that the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, would visit the families of the victims today.

Mchunu, who has instituted an investigation to establish the cause of the accident, said the resultant loss of life was unacceptable.

“We are saddened by continuous loss of innocent lives on the roads. We strongly feel these accidents are unacceptable and are avoidable. This should be a lesson to motorists to respect and adhere to the rule of law.

"We will continue to strengthen our road safety campaigns under Operation Valingozi and will continue maximising enforcement on the road,” said Mchunu.
